The signing for the NCC pathway detour of the Ottawa River Capital Pathway below the Supreme Court is scheduled to be installed today. The route takes westbound pathway users up through the Parliamentary Precinct via a pathway link and parking lot to the north of Bank Street. It leads them to the sidewalk outside the National Library/Archives building where a sign indicates cyclists must Walk their Bicycles. The detour had to include a portion of the sidewalk because there are no other alternatives and the traffic lane leading to Portage Bridge is reserved for buses only.

The sidewalk section is about 300 metres long and terminates at a pathway link that leads back to the Ottawa River Capital Pathway where it goes underneath the Portage Bridge approach.

That’s wonderful news… except they announced the closure on April 5. It’s now June 25. These better be some beautifully rendered signs.

While I try not to be cranky and make comparisons among the way cars and bicycles are treated, I wonder if there would ever be a situation in which a road was closed to cars and the responsible authorities would be given an 11-week grace period to arrange a detour and place signs for it.

I find that delay insulting, and will be informing the NCC of my feelings.
