Thousands participate in public consultation on LeBreton Flats

_ (via National Capital Commission) _ Thousands of Canadians from the National Capital Region and across the country participated during two weeks of public consultation on the proposals to redevelop LeBreton Flats, one of the most significant urban development sites in the core of Canada’s Capital.

 *
A total of 7,939 Canadians filled out the online questionnaire.

 *
Eighty-two percent of respondents were from the National Capital Region, and 18 percent were from elsewhere in Canada.

 *
More than 3,000 Canadians attended the open house and presentations at the Canadian War Museum or via webcast.

 *
More than 11,600 interactions on social media.

“The high level of civic engagement and serious debate on the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats will help guide this historic project to a successful conclusion,” said Dr. Mark Kristmanson, Chief Executive Officer of the National Capital Commission. “I wish to thank all Canadians who participated, and commend RendezVous LeBreton Group and Devcore Canderel DLS Group for their depth of commitment and passion for revitalizing the LeBreton Flats.”

A report summarizing the input provided by the public will be submitted to the evaluation committee for consideration in its assessment of the proposals. The report, which will be made public in the spring, will also inform subsequent phases of the project.

The presentations, videos, photos and brochures of both proposals will remain on the NCC website. Additional opportunities for public engagement and input into the project following the evaluation will be organized as the project advances. ** Evaluation process begins ** The evaluation committee includes renowned architect A. J. Diamond (Diamond Schmitt Architects) and professional planner and land economist Mark Conway (N. Barry Lyon Consultants), as well as the National Capital Commission’s (NCC) Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director of Capital Planning, and Director of Real Estate Transactions and Development.

In addition to the public input, the evaluation committee will also benefit from the technical review of each proposal by more than 20 subject matter experts. The experts—from the NCC, the City of Ottawa, the private sector and academia—provided their advice on decommissioning, transportation plans, servicing plans, sustainability strategies, economic development, and delivery models.

The evaluation committee will present its findings and recommendation to the NCC Board of Directors in the spring of 2016.

Once the NCC Board of Directors approves a preferred proponent, negotiations will begin, with the objective of reaching an agreement on the terms and conditions governing the future development of LeBreton Flats. The final agreement will be submitted to the federal government for approval.
