Super Bowl parties in Ottawa -- and how to throw your own

The Super Bowl is heralded each year by extravagent pop displays at the grocery store.

Super Bowl 2019 is just around the corner (Sunday, February 3) and Ottawa sports fans are gearing up for one of the social nights of the year.

Here’s what’s going on in Ottawa on Sunday night – kickoff is at 6:30 p.m.!

Super Bowl parties in Ottawa

Pretty much every sports bar in Ottawa will be doing something, so check in with your favourite one to see what they’re cooking up. Here’s a few suggestions:

  • Queen St. Fare is having a big bash, no cover charge and open to all ages. You can get advance tickets here…

  • Operation Come Home is having their annual Super Bowl fundraiser party at Buster’s Bar and Grill (Lincoln Fields Mall). The party includes free chili at half time, silent auctions, door prizes, raffles and more…

  • There’s no cover fee at Beyond The Pale Brewing Co., who will be staying open late so you can “watch the Rams destroy the Patriots live on our big screen.”

  • Mulligan’s assures you there’s no better place than them – boasting “screens so big it’ll feel like you’re on the field with the players.” It’s suggested you call ahead and reserve your table.

  • Both locations of The Senate Tavern (33 Clarence St. and 1159 Bank St.) guarantee a large supply of beverages and food – plus four kegs to be given away at each location.

How to throw your own Super Bowl party

Here’s some tips on how to make your own party at home a success:

  • When inviting friends, stay on the low side. Too many people makes it hard to have fun. The maximum size of your party scales linearly with the size of your television.

  • Snacks are a must – stick with things like pizza, nachos et al. Thou shalt stock an excess of napkins. It’s also a good idea to pace yourself and your guests with the snacks…

  • One or two alcoholic drinks per hour, and make sure friends know how they’re getting home. (This may be useful for that)
