Six demands released by Justice for Abdirahman Abdi group

_ (Post via organizers of Saturday’s March for Justice in memory of Abdirahman Abdi) _ OTTAWA — We release these demands towards the City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Police Service.

  1. Release entire SIU report into Abdirahman’s murder. _ Editor’s note: It wouldn’t be up to Ottawa Police or the City to release the SIU’s report. SIU reports are generally made exclusively for the Attorney General, who is currently Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi. One notable occasion a report was made public was in the case of a Toronto man shot dead. _

    1. The officers involved in the murder of Abdirahman should have their names released to the public, and be on unpaid leave for the duration of the investigation. _ Editor’s note: Media have identified the officers as Const. Daniel Montsion and Const. Dave Weir, but activists say it would be a show of good faith for the names to be officially released. _
    2. The Ottawa Police Services Board must carry out a comprehensive review of the Ottawa Police Service’s interaction with people in crisis, especially those who are racialized and Indigenous, and develop a policy on how the police shall interact with mentally distressed civilians.
  2. Body Cameras to be worn by all Ottawa Police Service officers.

  3. The City to Ottawa should invest in the Somali Centre for Family Services.

  4. A public apology from the Ottawa Police Service for releasing false information regarding the death of Abdirahman.
