Sept. 28, 1988: The original Ottawa Sunday Citizen, and how it beat the Ottawa Sun to the punch

You may have heard the news today: The last Sunday print edition of the Ottawa Citizen will be published on July 15, 2012, and 20 employees will lose their jobs at the newspaper.

The very first Sunday edition was published on September 28, 1988:

This is a scan from _ Each Morning Bright _ , a collection of stories, articles and history published for the paper’s 160th anniversary.  This excerpt from the book explains how the Citizen rushed to launch its Sunday edition before the original Ottawa Sun could get off the presses:

"...the Sun newspaper chain had bought the borderline upstart _ Sunday Herald _ and planned to launch a seven-day-a-week tabloid in Ottawa in September 1988.  Within two weeks, the _ Citizen _ increased newsroom staff by two dozen and launched its own Sunday edition, getting it out 10 days before the _ Sun _ 's first Ottawa paper hit the streets.  For _ Citizen _ staff it was a satisfying moment..."
