The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General is pleased to announce that Rideau Hall’s refrigerated skating rink will open to skaters this Saturday, December 8, 2018.

The general public is invited to come and enjoy a truly magical experience by lacing up their skates and gliding onto a forest-lined outdoor rink to skate to the sound of traditional music. Outdoor skating is part of Rideau Hall’s heritage since the time of Lord Dufferin, who was governor general from 1872 to 1878.

During the winter season, skaters can enjoy the outdoor rink on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as from December 27 to 31, from noon to 5 p.m. no reservation necessary.

Before heading to Rideau Hall, skaters should check the status of the rink online or by calling 1-888-842-4422 (toll-free) or 613-991-4422 (Monday to Friday) as it may be closed due to unfavourable weather conditions. Please note that this rink is exclusively for pleasure skating.

Winter at Rideau Hall

Skaters can meet at the Winter Pavilion, a heritage building, located next to the rink. Here, they are invited to lace up their skates and explore the history of winter sports at Rideau Hall as presented in a small exhibit. The residence’s State rooms are also open for free guided tours that allow visitors to discover a magnificent collection of Canadian art and furniture and learn more about the official functions of governors general. Guided tours are offered daily (reservations are required).
