4 May 2015 / #e-waste #electronic recycling Residents encouraged to recycle unwanted electronics for a great causeAlta Vista Councillor Jean Cloutier, along with community partner 1-800-GOT-JUNK? hosted an e-waste recycling event today at Elmvale Shopping Centre. Unwanted televisions, printers, cell phones and much more were being collected in order to ensure these items were recycled.Because the City of Ottawa does not accept e-waste during bi-weekly curbside pickup, this event provided the opportunity for residents to properly discard any electronics that may no longer be useful. In exchange, residents were asked to consider making a donation to the Heron Emergency Food Centre. “I am a supporter of the city’s recycling goals; in my commitment to sustainability and keeping our city green, I understand the value of giving residents a local and convenient means of recycling e-waste so that it does not end up in our landfills,” explains Councillor Cloutier. “If we can work alongside community partners such as 1-800-GOT-JUNK? while supporting the Heron Emergency Food Centre, then the community as a whole stands to benefit.” E-waste accounts for 3000 tonnes or about 300 garbage trucks full of refuse added to city landfills each year. This often includes steel, glass, copper, aluminum, plastics and precious metals that can be recycled and reused. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for future city organized e-waste recycling events by calling 3-1-1 or visiting Ottawa.ca.
