Police stepping up presence in ByWard Market over the weekend

_ (Via Ottawa Police) _ (Ottawa) – There will be an enhanced police presence in the ByWard Market area this weekend, in response to recent incidents of violence. Officers will be enforcing all offences under the Criminal Code, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Act and City Bylaws.

“We’re seeing an increase in violent crime, some of it gang related, in the downtown area and there will be an increase of officers focused on preventing that activity,” said Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau.

The ByWard Market area has a large number of restaurants, bars and nightclubs that cater to Ottawa residents and tourists. Criminal activity in this area affects not only the safety and security of people using this space but it also diminishes the public’s ability to enjoy all the City has to offer.

“Our primary concern is always public safety. We are increasing our presence, and we need the public’s help to address gang violence in our City,” said Chief Bordeleau. “This is a reminder to Ottawa residents and visitors to report suspicious activity immediately”.
