** MUSIC: ** Good things never go extinct. After a rocking bluesfest performance in 2010, San fran indie band ** The Dodos are back in town to play a show at Mavericks ** on Friday, September 16 .  Supported by the luyas, a collecton of musicians formerly of miracle fortness among others.

** PLANES: ** Michael Potter and his gang of merry airmen who keep vintage planes alive and flying for the rest of us to enjoy are having an air show. A Spitfire, Mustang, Corsair and a host of other cool vintage planes will take to the skies this Saturday Sept.17 at the ** Wings over Gatineau Air Show ** . Show begins at 10am, with flying commencing at 11am.  Admission is $10pp with kids 13 and under being free. The Snowbirds aerobatic team are performing at 3:15pm.  If you are any kind of aviation buff life myself, this is a once a year event not to be missed!

** ART TOUR: ** I won’t be the only one to suggest this, but the ** West End Studio Tour, ** where 20 artists open up their studios and homes, is Sat. Sept. 17 and Sun. Sept. 18 (also Sept. 24-25) from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (There’s a preview at the Wall Space Gallery on Thurs. Sept. 15, 7-9 p.m.) I’m hoping to get to as many as possible, but want to check out Choleena DiTullio’s whimsical and “green” creations, Alison Fowler’s vibrant nature paintings, Rob Huntley’s amazing photos and Andrew King’s unique art which I’ve liked since I first saw it (he’s very funny on Twitter, too).

** WRITING & MUSIC: ** ** Celebration of Words and Music: Remembering John Lavery ** , Saturday, September 17 at 2:00 pm at the Foyer – Maison de la Culture de Gatineau – 855 La Gappe, Gatineau. Fiction writer and troubadour John Lavery passed away in May while he was in the final stages of recording his CD with the help of Bova Sound Studios. If you want to hear beautiful guitar and witty lyrics full of puns and humour, you shouldn’t miss this event. This will be a fine send off for a great man. Come celebrate.

** FOOD: ** Each neighbourhood in Ottawa has pretty awesome restaurants but the eyes will be on the Wellington community this Saturday, as it will be showcasing its foodie side for the ** Taste of Wellington West ** festival ** . ** On September 17, just about every eatery will offer passersby street-side tasting, and while you munch on the delicacies, you’ll be able to see a classic car show, a bike parade and listen to live music. ** ** The event is free but ** **

** FUNDRAISER: ** Join emcee Carol Anne Meehan as ** Music for Life Fundraising Concerts ** will bring fundraising and music together in support of local cancer charities. This years focus is on oral and lung cancers with all proceeds going to the The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. Saturday, September 17 at 12:00pm at the Obsession Lounge Patio Grill (1575 St. Laurent).

** RUNNING: ** It’s a running weekend! Local runners get the chance to raise funds for two great charities this Sunday, Sept. 18. There’s the ** Army Run ** , which raises funds for Soldier On and the Military Families Fund . This race has been growing at an incredible pace since its inception in 2008. There’s something incredibly inspiring about watching the ill and injured Soldiers and athletes with disabilities take off at the early start. The Army Run is sold out (both the 5k and half marathon) but cheerers are welcomed! On the same day, you can also participate the ** Terry Fox Run ** , which raises funds for cancer research. This legendary event has become an Ottawa tradition, with events throughout the month at area schools. This event is open to all and registration can be completed in advance or on the day of the run. If you can’t join us out there on Sunday, then please send some sunshine!

** CYCLING: ** This Sunday is the 7th annual ** Forest Lea Mountain Bike Enduro ** at the Forest Lea MTB Trails near Pembroke. A bit of a drive, but a great way to spend a day outdoors and support a community project. Take in the mountain bike races, grab a burger from the lunchtime barb-q, draw a prize… all while helping out the ** Ottawa Valley Mountain Biking Association ** !

** ANIMATION: ** From September 21st to 25th, the nation’s capital will once again become the center of the animation universe. The ** Ottawa International Animation Festival ** (OIAF) is the largest event of its kind in North America, a major film event attracting attendees from around the world. Film buffs, art lovers and cartoon fans won’t want to miss this year’s great line up of screenings taking place at ByTowne Cinema, National Gallery of Canada, Empire Theatres Rideau Centre and Arts Court Theatre.

** MUSEUMS: ** Check out ** LEGION HALLS ** , an exhibit at the Canadian War Museum (1 Vimy Place), ongoing to November 20. Since the Royal Canadian Legion was founded in 1925, its local branches – Legion Halls – have functioned as community centres and gathering sites. The role is now changing along with Canada’s demographics. The declining population of Second World War veterans has challenged the Legion and its branches to attract new members while still remaining active in traditional pursuits. Tobi Asmoucha’s photographs illustrate the connection that Legion Halls have to the past, and the role they play in Canadian communities today.

And on Wednesday, the Sens are back on the ice for their first pre-season game against Boston .

** MAKE REAL CHANGE HAPPEN. ** Join me for breakfast to  launch of the ** 2011 Ottawa United Way campaign ** . Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Aberdeen Pavillion, Lansdowne Park. Close to 1400 people will be there to be served by celebs, and then hear the outline of the biggest charitable campaign in the city. Make sure your workplace has its own campaign ready. Tickets are $30 each - there are still a few tables available. I promise it will be breakfast at 105BPM!
