** Thursday-Sunday, September 19-22: The Richmond Fair **

The 169th Richmond Fair offers a venue for those in the community to showcase their arts, crafts, livestock, produce, etc. Taking place at the Richmond Fairgrounds (6121 Perth Street, at the corner of Huntley Road and Perth Street in Richmond), the Richmond Fair has something for everyone, including agricultural awareness and educational displays, entertainment for the kiddies, midway rides and various bands on the stage in the evenings.

** ** Thursday, September 19: Andrew Steinmetz reads from “This Great Escape: The Case of Michael Paryla” **

7pm at Raw Sugar, 692 Somerset W. “This Great Escape is the story of an obsessive quest to uncover the life of Steinmetz’s distant cousin Michael. Michael Paryla was a bit actor whose only claim to fame is 57 seconds of uncredited screen time in The Great Escape, the most lavish P.O.W. film Hollywood ever produced.” Admission is free. I read the first book & was riveted. Steinmetz is an excellent story teller with a wry sense of humour & an ability to encapsulate the war era.

** ** Friday, September 20: Pecha Kucha Global Night **

Pecha Kucha Global Night is an evening to discover a dozen or so creative local projects, from film to cycling to activism, all under the theme “Hidden Heroes.” Speakers have just over six minutes each to present their ideas. They’ll be doing so at the Mercury Lounge from 7-10 p.m., joining Pecha Kuchas on the same theme in over 100 locations around the world.

** ** Friday-Sunday, September 20-22: Used Book Sales **

This weekend brings not one but two book sales by local groups that support important local libraries and archives. The Friends of Library and Archives Canada holds its Annual Giant Used Book Sale Sept. 20-22 at the St. Laurent Centre. On Sept. 21, the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library bring their Mini-Mammoth Book Sale to the library’s James Bartleman Archives and Library Materials Centre. Time to curl up with a good book! **

** ** Saturday, September 21: Ottawa Senators Fan Fest **

This annual free event includes an intra-squad game, the Sens Street tour (interactive games and inflatables), a used equipment sale, a “fans-only” press conference and entertainment throughout the arena. Starts at 9am, with open practices at 10am and 12:25pm and the intra-squad game at 11:00am. It’s free but fans are encouraged to bring a donation for the food bank.

** ** Saturday, September 21: Chemistry Magic Show at Carleton University **

The one-hour magic show will start at 5 p.m. and we’ll have plenty of colourful reactions, flames, and explosions! If you’ve never seen our show before it is definitely not to be missed! And even if you have seen it we can guarantee you haven’t seen every trick we have up our sleeves! The show is appropriate and fun for everyone ages 5 and up. Please be aware that there will be loud noises that may scare some young children. **

This Saturday is National Learn to Code Day and so Ladies Learning Code will be putting on an Into to HTML & CSS course that is open to all (men too!). They’re a great group who encourage learning in a relaxed environment and want to make it accessible to all. I’ll be there - come learn to code with me! **

** Saturday, September 21: Red Bull Thre3Style Regional Qualifiers **

The Red Bull Thre3Style Regional Qualifiers are being held this Saturday, September 21 at Ritual. This year, DJs Acro, Bnutz, Brains4brkfst, Cam B, Dlux, Ken L Jones and Kid SL are competing head-to-head to crown Ottawa’s best party rocker who will represent the city at the National Finals in Calgary. This event is a guaranteed good time.

** ** Saturday, September 21: Adam Daudrich Trio at GigSpace **

Love classic piano trio jazz? Montreal (and ex-Ottawa) pianist Adam Daudrich follows that tradition, with a touch of pop for modernity. He’ll showcase his own compositions on Saturday, with a few standards as well. Expect an evening of flowing, melodic music, where all three musicians know the songs so well they’ll be playing them right to you. **

The Urban Craft Market is back this Sunday, September 22 at the Glebe Community Centre. Urban Craft provides a great opportunity to browse through over 40 local vendors who’ll be selling their crafts at affordable prices. This is the ideal place to go to find special hand-crafted gifts and goodies. Support local!

** ** Sunday, September 22 and Tuesday, September 24: Just Food Farm **

Did you know that Ottawa has a working urban farm? You can buy fresh vegetables, fruit, herbs and wild foods from around 10 different producers at the Just Food farm gate on Sunday, Sept. 22 (and Sundays until Oct. 6). On Tuesday, Sept. 24 you can tour the farm and find out more about Just Food’s plans to establish a local food and urban agriculture hub in Ottawa’s Greenbelt.

** ** Friday, September 27: Mayor’s Breakfast Series **

The Ottawa Chamber of Commerce/Ottawa Business Journal Mayor’s Breakfast Series features guest speaker Elyse Allan, President and CEO, GE Canada . This series is an important forum for issues that are vital to Ottawa’s prosperity and quality of life. The breakfast is held at Ottawa City Hall at 110 Laurier Avenue West in the Jean Pigott Hall at 7:15am-9:00am. It includes a buffet breakfast followed by a presentation in the Andrew Haydon Council Chambers.  At every breakfast, I provide an update for attendees on recent city hall issues and initiatives. Tickets are $35 for chamber members, $45 for non-chamber members. **
