** ** Friday, March 7: Talk Purple To Me **

A city wide fundraiser Friday night, to help break the silence on mental health. 100% of door & ticket receipts, raffles and donations will go to D.I.F.D. The focus is to engage college and university students on anti bullying and mental health wellness. Tequila Jacks, Dodge City, Flybar, and The Lodge. (Joined by one bar in Toronto where U of YT students have formed a DIFD Club.)

** ** Friday, March 7: The Lucas Haneman Trio at the National Arts Centre **

This season, the National Arts Centre Orchestra is introducing classical music audiences to jazz at three “Casual Fridays” concerts. Listeners can hear an hour-long jazz show at 5:45 p.m. in the NAC foyer featuring a local jazz group, followed by the orchestra at 7. On Friday, versatile and creative guitarist Lucas Haneman will bring in his trio. Lucas has developed a voice on the guitar that combines many influences with the free spirit and language of the jazz tradition. Afterwards, the Orchestra will perform Forsyth’s Double Concerto for viola and cello, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4.

** ** Friday-Sunday, March 7-16: DiverCiné Film Festival **

The 12th annual DiverCiné Film Festival at the Bytowne Cinema. Presented by the Canadian Film Institute, the Embassy of France, and the Department of Canadian Heritage, the festival will feature 12 films from 10 Francophone countries including France, Senegal, Morocco, Canada, and Cambodia.

** ** Saturday, March 8: Great Bowls of Fire **

The Ottawa Guild of Potters hosts this heart- and stomach-warming fundraiser for the Ottawa Food Bank. A dozen local restaurants cook up an array of soups and breads, served to you in a handcrafted pottery bowl of your choosing that you get to take home. There’ll be music and an auction, too. 5-8:30 p.m. at the Glebe Community Centre; $45 tickets in advance from Il Primo Ristorante.

** ** Saturday, March 8: Hilotrons Record Release Show **

Over in Wakefield this Saturday, The Hilotrons will be releasing their new record. Held at the Blacksheep Inn, the night of music will feature live performances by Linsey Wellman, David O’Meara, Mike Dubue, Adam Saikaley, and George Crumb’s Black Angels performed by Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble with visuals by Hard Science.

** ** Saturday, March 8: ByTowne Cinema **

I bet 95% of you are done with the snow. I’m 95% sure there will still be lots of snow on the ground on Saturday. So, I think you should head to the ByTowne Cinema to spend an afternoon at the movies. At 1:30, they are showing Her , the most excellent Spike Jonze movie about a man who falls in love with his operating system. Seriously, it’s a wonderful movie. At 4:10, they will have Oscar nominated animated shorts . Mix in some of their world famous popcorn and you have yourself a mighty fine afternoon.

** ** Saturday-Sunday, March 8-9: Wakefield International Film Festival **

Two award-winning films about people and the environment are the focus of this last weekend of the Festival: _ Watermark _ , a film by Jennifer Baichwal and Edward Burtynsky that looks at the earth’s water, and _ People of a Feather _ , a documentary by Joel Heath about an Inuit community facing ecological change. A third, short film— _ Nunaaluk: A Forgotten Story _ , about Inuit and Cree neighbours—is on Saturday.
