The 2014 edition will feature over 400 performances, many of which are local-based productions. The Fringe is one of the city’s most accessible festivals with tickets for performances priced under $11. What’s more, 100% of ticket sales go directly to the performers, and that right there is seriously amazing. Building on last year’s success, festival organizers will continue to offer a series of free outdoor concerts featuring performances by Silkken Laumann, StillNative, HIGHS, Django Libre, Crissi Cochrane and the Adam Saikaley Quintet._ – Eliane Laberge, Eventful Capital _** Thursday, June 19-Sunday, June 22: Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival** The largest dragonboat festival in North America, if not the world, takes place at Mooney’s Bay beach this weekend, kicking off Thursday evening at 6pm with a free concert lineup consisting of Claude Munson & The Storm Outside, The Zolas at 8pm and Stars at 9:30pm. The racing itself starts off Friday evening with some charity challenge cup races for the top fund raising teams. Saturday sees all the teams racing from 7:50am to 5:30pm and the top teams from Saturday advance to race on Sunday. In addition to two and a bit days of dragonboat races, you’ll find an impressive lineup of musical acts, including The Sheepdogs Friday evening, Arkells on Saturday and Down With Webster on Sunday. There’s a children’s area with lots to do on Saturday and Sunday. And if all that’s not enough, you’ll find food vendors on-site and a beach bar for refreshments. The best part is that admission is free._Gordon Dewis __ (Gordon is one of the racers competing to raise money for several very worthy local charities that are supported by the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation. This year’s goal is $425,000. People can make a donation at the festival, online through the website, or they can support Gordon directly here . _ )** Friday-Sunday, June 20-22: Summer Solstice Aboriginal Arts Festival & Powwow** The annual Summer Solstice Aboriginal Arts Festival & International Competition Pow Wow is being held from Friday, June 20 to Sunday, June 22 at Vincent Massey Park in Ottawa. The 2014 edition, which offers free admission, will feature a variety of traditional powwow dance competitions along with live music shows, a drum contest, a children’s village, workshops, artisans, crafts, a selection of traditional aboriginal foods and lots more. On Saturday, they will be at the Ottawa Jazz Festival performing Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Come explore it with the first a series of nature walks organized by The Friends of Petrie Island. Sunday’s focus is on wild edible plants and Petrie Island’s Native Wildflower Garden. Using only what could be sourced from the market’s producers, they prepared and plated tastes of the region. When all was said and done, David Godsoe of Indulge Kitchen and Cocktails (4456 Limebank Road) won the hearts and tummies of market-goers. This coming Sunday, the black box competition happens again. Consider it “Iron Chef goes camping.” Challenging last year’s champion will be Stephen Lasalle of The Albion Rooms (33 Nicholas Street). He and Godsoe have a little over an hour to create and plate 200 bite-sized samples for the public to vote on. Food will be served at 11:30 am. Kevin Breit has recorded with a long list of Juno winners, including his own 2012 Juno award winning Stretch Orchestra, which includes Ottawa’s Jesse Stewart.
