Asinabka, Ottawa’s first Indigenous film festival, is back for its second year with films and media by Indigenous and non-Indigenous filmmakers and artists from Canada and around the world. There’s a lot to choose from, but check out _ The People of the Kattawapiskak River _ , about the housing crisis faced by the people of Attawapiskat, and a Q&A with director Alanis Obomsawin on Thursday. There’s also an intriguing-sounding “gallery crawl” with exhibits and multidisciplinary performances at Gallery 101 and Fall Down Gallery on Friday. ** [

Crush Improv is combining original sketch comedy with their usual improvised fun to the Gladstone’s stage as part of their One Night Stand series. Starts at 7:30pm, tickets $15.

** ** Saturday, July 27: Flugtag **

Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and the brainy to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines, and launch themselves off a 22-foot high flight deck in hopes of soaring into the wild blue yonder…or more often than not, plunging into the waters below. Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, pushes the envelope of human-powered flight, but competitors need more than airtime to reach the podium. At the Museum of Civilization riverbanks.- _

** ** Sunday, July 28: Ottawa Valley Midsummer Herbfest **

Herb lovers unite! The 17th annual Herbfest takes place this Sunday at The Herb Garden in Almonte from 9am to 5pm, rain or shine. This one-day event is a must-attend for those interested in herbs, gardening, cooking and living a healthy lifestyle. Throughout the day, enjoy live entertainment, guided herbal walks, face painting, henna tattoos and dancing fairies flitting through the gardens. Enjoy a quiet rest in the gazebo, do yoga in the gardens,  walk the Wetland Trail or just meander through the beautifully landscaped herb garden beds. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $4 or bought at the gate for $5/person, $15/family. Parking is $2/car. Check out the website for more information and directions to the site. **

Ottawa Chamberfest has another face late at night, with its Chamberfringe concerts: mainstream jazz, Latin jazz, cabaret, and lots more. It starts Thursday and runs until August 8. The highest profile jazz concert features two Canadian masters: Phil Dwyer and Don Thompson, who have collaborated in many groups for more than two decades, and have just released a new album together.
