** Thursday, July 11: Just Food’s Children’s Garden Programs **

Share the joys of urban food-growing and the outdoors with your kids. Just Food is offering a children’s program at the Marigold Friendship Garden in west Ottawa on Thursday from 10-11:30 a.m. Stay tuned for kids' programs at two other community gardens later in July.

**

Starting this Thursday July 11 and running until July 14,the Dusk Dances festival is being held at Strathcona Park. This is a great occasion to take in contemporary and traditional dance in an outdoor setting. The performances a free however donations are strongly encouraged.

** ** Thursday, July 11-Monday, July 15: Music and Beyond **

Music an Beyond continues to present concerts from now through Sunday. For example, if you’re in the vicinity of Parliament Hill at 11am Thursday or Friday, you’ll hear the Dominion Carillonneur playing Gershwin, W.C. Handy and Jerome Kern (among others) on Thursday and Godard, Gounod and Frank Mills (among others) on Friday. And with concerts at various locations throughout the city including Dominion-Chalmers United Church, Tabaret Hall, the Ottawa Chinese-Canadian Heritage Centre, St. Barnabus Church and the NAC, there’s no end of music. 7-10pm at Watson’s Mill, Manotick. Watson’s Mill has launched a craft beer tasting event in Manotick, hosting at least 10 breweries. Breweries include Barley Days, Kichesippi, Beau’s, Cassel, Broadhead, Nickel Brook, Turtle Island and Mad Hatter. Come enjoy some live jazz (Swampy Waters); meet some passionate local brewers (JP Fournier (Turtle Island), Justin Murray (Mad Hatter), and Josh Larocque (Broadhead)); and taste some creative paired nibbles by Indulge Kitchen and Cocktail.

Discover what makes Ottawa a great cycling city by exploring a guided cycling route along low-traffic streets and bike paths. Decipher the route, search for answers to quirky clues and quizzes, and test your skills in a friendly challenge with other rally-riders!

At the Carleton Tavern, 223 Armstrong, Upstairs. Doors 7pm; reading shortly after 7:30pm. I will be reading a new series of prose poems entitled “jazz.” I don’t believe American poet Jessica Smith has read in Ottawa before. Marilyn Irwin has just won Arc Poetry Magazine’s Diana Brebner Award. should be a fun evening. the pizza & smoked meat platters are divine. & the Carleton is one of the few bars left in the city where you can get quarts.

** ** Until Sunday, July 14: Nocturne V Night Sky Festival **

Be awed by the night sky. Cube Gallery hosts its annual Nocturne art show and festival, starting with a group art exhibit vernissage on Thursday, 6-9 p.m. On Friday, residents of Julian Avenue off Wellington West turn off their lights for a street star party, complete with live music and star viewing made possible by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. There’s also a Family Astronomy Workshop on Friday with help from the Canada Science and Technology Museum, and lots of special events and food offerings from local businesses and restaurants, such as Merry Dairy’s new “Spiral Galaxy Cone,” yoga by night with Adi Shesha and lots more.

The students of Algonquin’s Event Management program are producing summer shows, with proceeds to the Children’s Wish Foundation. (The winter students raised over $80,000 for CWF). This Sunday, 5pm, at Lone Star St Laurent, a fajita buffet with all the fixins, country music, line dancing - and more. Y’all bring your dancing shoes!!

** ** Monday, July 15 - Caridad Cruz and Miguel de Armas at Les Brasseurs du Temps **

Caridad Cruz and Miguel de Armas are two of the best musicians playing Cuban jazz locally, and when they perform together, the music sizzles! Both born in Cuba and now settled in Ottawa, Caridad on vocals and Miguel on piano have decades of experience separately. Their appearance at BDT in downtown Gatineau is a must-see for Latin jazz fans – and you can slake the heat with cool beers from BDT’s microbrewery.
