Here are some picks for great events happening in Ottawa between September 29 and October 5.  This just may be the most eclectic list of events yet!

** Josee from Frugal Fun Ottawa : **

** CULTURE: ** Culture Days are on this weekend in Ottawa. There are over 100 great, free activities and events taking place around town on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. My favorite find so far is a U/V Glow Performance put on my Mini Cirque. It will take place at Arts Court (2 Daly Ave.) on Saturday from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. I also blogged about a few other great Culture Days activites on frugalfish recently.

** FASHION: ** Ottawa Fashion Week is a platform for national and international designers and artists to showcase their work and talent. Thursday to Sunday at the Ottawa Convention Centre

** Eugene Haslam , Zaphod’s Owner: **

** ROSH HASHANAH: ** Chabad of Centrepointe at 101 Centrepointe Drive. Starts Thursday and Friday, with morning service at 9:00am and events/activities all day. Includes a children’s camp during services, refreshments, songs and storytelling.

** OKTOBERFEST: ** Oktoberfest Ottawa 2011 is being billed as the city’s premiere Oktoberfest celebration this year. With many local performers such as Amos The Transparent, Silver Creek and Graham Greer along with - all the way from Sunnyvale Trailer Park in Nova Scotia - Randy and Mr. Lahey from Trailer Park Boys! The dynamic duo will be providing ‘top level security’ and laughs at The Richmond Fairgrounds in Richmond Ontario, home of Oktoberfest Ottawa 2011. This is sure to be a most memorable Oktoberfest Ottawa weekend! (Friday to Sunday.)

** MUSIC: ** Get your hats and boots our for the final weekend of the O-Town Hoedown, Ottawa’s Alt-whatever country music festival. Performances are ongoing through until Sunday at various venues around the city. Chekc out the lineup on the website and listen to festival organiser Lefty McRighty’s radio show " Lefty’s Roadhouse " Thursdays at 10pm on CHUO .

PUG CRAWL: ** Only pug owners really understand pugs, so why not come out to Wag on Bank on Friday for an evening of pug fun! Mingle, mix and exchange funny stories about your beloved pug – and be sure to grab a cup of Wag’s amazing coffee! It all starts at 6:30pm! Woof!

** COMEDY: ** Scott Faulconbridge performs at Yuk Yuk’s Elgin location , Thursday to Saturday.

Scott Faulconbridge was nominated for a 2009 Canadian Comedy Award as Best Male Stand-Up.

He has performed twelve times at the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival and earned two more Canadian Comedy Award nominations as a member of the award-winning troupe On the Spot Improv. Scott can be seen on CBC’s “The Debaters”.

** FILM: ** I’m unfortunately out of town for a few days, but if I was around, I’d be hitting up the 8th Annual Indian Film Festival which wraps up this weekend at the National Library & Archives. Presented by the Canadian Film Institute in collaboration with the High Commission of India to Canada, this year’s festival honours the “Year of India in Canada”, There are two screenings on Friday night, and one on Saturday. Admission won’t set you back even a rupee (it’s free).

** MUSIC: ** Toronto Indie Pop darlings Gramercy Riffs play an intimate show at Zaphods this Friday.  Well worth the price of admission.

** Tim Schobert, Classical Music Ottawa : **

** CLASSICAL: ** This coming week there are so many classical music concerts on that it’s difficult to choose which one to attend.  On Friday, Ars Nova presents the duo Delitiae Musicae who play rarely-heard Spanish music from the sixteenth century.  Then over three days – Monday to Wednesday – Wolfgang David performs all of Beethoven’s violin sonatas at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa. ** HOCKEY: ** On Saturday morning, bring the kids out to Puck Drop at Scotiabank Place - a free event hosted by the Ottawa Senators.  It features games and facepainting for kids, a Sens open practice and the unveiling of the new Senators heritage uniform. **

** GOTH: ** Who knew that there was a Goth Syndicate in Ottawa? Apparently, the city isn’t as sleepy as a lot of Canadians think! On Saturday, come and enjoy a dark and magical night of performances with the Visions and Voices event , at the Massonic Lodge (430 Churchill Avenue). A Dark Bazaar will also be organized and vendors will display exotic outfits. Something different for your Saturday night, eh?

** JAZZ: ** You’ve enjoyed his quirky, irreverent movie reviews on CBC Radio. Now hear Robert Fontaine and his quartet release its first CD : a mixture of jazz standards and some fine originals. We particularly like trumpeter Rick Rangno’s tribute to Kenny Wheeler: The Quiet Fellow. Sunday, 8 p.m., at Les Brasseurs du Temps in Gatineau (which is only 5 minutes walk north from Les Terrasses de la Chaudiere, and serves beer made on its own premises).

** LITERARY: ** The A B Series , Ottawa’s reading series for performance, sound and experimental poetry, begins its new season on Saturday with former Ottawan Peter Norman and seasoned surrealist Stuart Ross. 301 1/2 Bank St. Doors: 7pm; Performance: 7:30pm $7. Norman’s first book of poetry is At the Gates of the Theme Park (Mansfield Press); Ross’s first novel is Snowball, Dragonfly, Jew (ECW Press).

** NATURE: ** Bill Mason Centre Family Day , Sunday from 10am until 2pm. Looking to enjoy some outdoor fall activities with the kids? Outdoor education instructors will be on hand to guide you through the centre’s trails and introduce you to the diverse wildlife. A hot dog lunch is available for a small fee, but the outdoor activities are free. The Bill Mason Centre is located at 3088 Dunrobin Road, at the West Carleton High School. See you there!

** FUNDRAISER: ** So many great events this week – like Canada Without Poverty’s Get Up Stand Up on the 29th and the dozens of Culture Days events happening this weekend – but I have to highlight the Kickass Talks for CARE at Petit Bill’s Bistro on Sunday, October 2 from 12-3 p.m. Hear inspiring “Kickass Canadians” like Amanda Putz, Richard Weber and Julie Drury, and enjoy local music, free baked goods, tea and coffee (and cash bar), and a silent auction of items from local artists and businesses. ** MINI GOLF: ** The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario’s Putt Out Heart Disease (aka Visez santé par le minigolf) takes place on Monday, October 3rd. You and three friends can sign up for 18 holes of minigolf at A Putt Above (3825 Richmond Road in Bells Corners) at $25/person. Don’t worry if you don’t have three friends, you can join up with a team for $25. The doors open at 5pm and drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served until 8pm. There are some pretty awesome prizes to win, including a bike from Kundstadt Sports, a spa package from The Spa, and a $200 gift certificate from Darcy McGee’s. ** APPLES: ** With the fall season upon us, one of my favourite autumn activities is to visit an apple orchard and pick some apples. Just south of Ottawa is the Applehill Fruit Farm which offers “pick your own apples” from 10-6pm seven days a week. until the season ends. Pick a bushel of your favourite variety of apples then take the free wagon ride around the orchard. You can also enjoy sampling the many apple products available at their fresh fruit stand. The apple orchard is located off Prince of Wales Drive at 3699 Jockvale Road.
