Ottawa’s first complete street, Churchill Avenue, opens early and on budget

Churchill Avenue opened today, on budget and six months ahead of schedule, with enhanced facilities for all users–pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and transit users alike -making Churchill Avenue Ottawa’s first  complete street. ** Complete streets ** are streets built for everyone. As Ottawa grows and develops, the City is ensuring streets are designed to meet the needs of all users, whether they choose to walk, bike, drive or take public transit.

The renewal of Churchill Avenue is a $21.4-million integrated road, sewer and water rehabilitation project that includes right-of-way upgrades, such as raised cycling lanes (called cycle tracks), improved street lighting, traffic control signals at three intersections, traffic calming measures, concrete curbs and sidewalks, streetscaping, and utilities relocation. ** Cycle tracks ** are innovative, paved asphalt bike lanes that run between the sidewalk and the road. They are predominantly one-way and follow the direction of traffic. They are designed to provide more comfort for cyclists by separating them from motor-vehicle traffic with a curb and by running the track at the same level as the sidewalk.
