Brian is one of Canada’s foremost writers of books for young people, and it’s exciting to premiere his wonderful story at our national theatre festival. We think Up to Low will delight young and old with the vibrancy of its unique characters, the poignancy of the story, and its heartfelt connection to our community. We’re proud to be able to showcase some of Ottawa’s finest theatre artists and musicians at Magnetic North!"Canada’s only national theatre festival, MNTF celebrates artists from across the country. This year the Festival returns to its home base in Ottawa.MNTF’s Artistic Executive Director, Brenda Leadlay, says: “Up to Low was invited to join the festival line-up for a number of reasons – foremost because it features some of Ottawa’s most accomplished artists in a local fictionalized story by Brian Doyle that perfectly suits this year’s theme of Radical Lessons for a Meaningful Life.”This world premiere is a truly local event. Odyssey Theatre, National Arts Centre and Great Canadian Theatre Company, have all provided support in the development and production stages. Adapted by Ottawa’s Janet Irwin, Up to Low is brought to the stage by writers, directors, actors and musicians from the National Capital Region. The language, humour and music reflect the Ottawa Valley. Doyle’s exploration of themes of loss and love, redemption, and the healing power of community makes this story universal.
