Local students get creative to design official Ottawa 2017 postcards

Mayor Jim Watson is inviting Ottawa students in Grades 1 to 12 to create the official postcards for the Ottawa 2017 celebrations.

Mayor Watson was joined by Ottawa 2017 Co-chairs, Councillors Jean Cloutier and Mathieu Fleury, to officially launch the city-wide competition today at Featherston Drive Public School in Alta Vista Ward.

“Ottawa 2017 is not just a celebration of our past,” Mayor Watson explained to Ms. Davies’ Grade 4 class. “It is a celebration of our future. This contest is just one way we will be engaging you, Ottawa’s future leaders, to contribute your energy and talents to this historic celebration.”

birthday is a celebration for everyone,” said Councillor Cloutier. “With the help of students in this class, and across the city, we will create a series of unique postcards that celebrate our diversity and all the wonderful things that Ottawa has to offer.”

Councillor Fleury noted that “the winning students will become part of Canadian history, as their postcards will be mailed and emailed across the country to invite Canadians to their Capital to celebrate our big year.”

Students have until May 21 to complete their artwork. Entries will be judged by a panel of local artists, who will select one winning entry from each grade. The winning students and their classmates will be invited to a pizza party at City Hall. Each winner will also receive a framed commemorative copy of their winning design.
