Kanata councillor Feltmate re: July 24 flooding

Peggy Feltmate, the City Councillor for Kanata South, sent an email out today about the July 24 flooding in Kanata and Stittsville . **

**

A number of homes in Kanata South were flooded after heavy rainfall last Friday. For some homeowners it was the third or fourth time their homes have been flooded in 14 years.
This is beyond unacceptable. I made it clear I want a full investigation on why the flooding occurred and City staff have confirmed that it will take place. It must to include a review of the amount of rainfall the storm water drainage system needs to be able to accommodate.
If you home has been flooded, it is important to report it. The City call centre will provide you with a number when you report it and you will need that number, if you or your insurance company files a claim against the City. Knowing all of the locations where flooding took place will ensure that the investigation is thorough.
I know many people whose homes were flooded have already reported it. If you have not, flooding can be reported by calling 311 or e-mailing

. As well, please make sure others you know who were flooded have this information.
In areas where there have been a number of reports of flooding, garbage trucks have been going round so that items that have to be thrown out as a result of flooding are not sitting in front of people’s homes for several days. For people whose homes have been flooded the normal limit on how much garbage can be put out does not apply. If your street appears to have been missed, please contact my office at peggy.feltmate@ottawa.ca or 613-580-2752 and my staff will make sure Solid Waste Services are notified.
If claims need to be filed against the City, insurance companies will usually be doing it. However, if you need to file a claim, information on how to do so can be found at

Normally when a serious problem occurs I like to visit people who are affected and hear from them directly. I am frustrated that this is not possible, but my office is following up with specific questions and I will be organizing a public meeting as soon as there is information on the reasons for the flooding and what action will be taken.
  Sincerely,
  Peggy
