Here's what's on for Black History Month in Ottawa

The Gift of Jazz”, a tribute to Black History Month showcasing music from Africa to New Orleans to The True North Strong and Free, by Ottawa-based Odyssey Showcase.

Every February, people across Canada celebrate the honour and legacy of past and present Black Canadians with events throughout the month. Ottawa is a multicultural city, and there is an abundance of events and activities you can participate in to mark Black History Month.

Here’s a quick look at activities happening in Ottawa

Stories From The Black Diaspora

Join notable figures in the black community for a reading of children’s stories by black authors.

The event will hold at Ottawa Public Library, Centerpointe branch on Feb. 9 from 2 PM to 4 PM.

There will be a special display of books by black authors and a bookseller on-site if you wish to purchase books.

This event is free and perfect for the entire family.

The Gift of Jazz

Odyssey Showcase, on Feb. 13 at 7:30 PM, will host a tribute to black history month showcasing music from Africa to New Orleans.

The concert takes place at The National Gallery of Canada Theatre and will feature performances from CTV’s Stefan Keyes Deborah Davis and Segue to Jazz. Tickets cost $40 and are available through Eventbrite.

Africa Day on The Hill

The African Canadian Association Ottawa on Feb. 15 at 6 PM will be hosting a celebration of culture, dance, music, fashion and food reflecting the rich heritage of peoples of African Descent. Admission is free; however, RSVP is mandatory and government-issued ID with photo required to gain entry.

Afro Roots Dance Festival

On Feb. 29 at 11 AM, The Cultural Arts Studio will host a full day of various dance workshops and seminars rooted in African culture. The workshops will include: Afro Beat, Afro-Carribean, Afro-Brazilian, Drumming workshops and much more. The event will also feature highlights of Kizomba, Salsa and Reggae.

Global Community Alliance 11th Annual Gala and Awards Ceremony

Join the Global Community Alliance for an evening of celebration, recognition and entertainment in honour of Black History Month. The event will hold at Sheraton Ottawa Hotel on Feb. 29 from 6 PM and tickets cost $75. For more information email yomipratt@gmail.com
