City seeking public input on two commemorative naming proposals

_ (press release) _ The City of Ottawa Commemorative Naming Committee is conducting public consultations on two separate naming proposals to:

 * 
Name the baseball diamonds at Grasshopper Park (1615 Kilborn Avenue), the “Bill and Marion Atwell Baseball Diamonds”

 * 
Name a new park at 34 Arkose Street “Richardson Heritage Park”

** Bill and Marion Atwell Baseball Diamonds (Ward 18 – Alta Vista) ** In recognition of Bill and Marion Atwell’s extensive community service, the City of Ottawa has been asked to name the baseball diamonds at Grasshopper Park, located at 1615 Kilborn Avenue, the “Bill and Marion Atwell Baseball Diamonds.”

Bill and Marion Atwell were actively involved with the Alta Vista Little League (now Ottawa South Little League) for several decades, beginning in the 1960s. Their household was always full of little league activity as it was located on Courtice Street, just steps from the ball diamonds and park at 1615 Kilborn Avenue. View the online proposal for the “Bill and Marion Atwell Baseball Diamonds.” ** Richardson Heritage Park (Ward 4 – Kanata North) ** In recognition of Thomas A. Richardson’s historical significance to the community, the City of Ottawa has been asked to name a new park at 34 Arkose Street “Richardson Heritage Park.”

The Richardson family is important to the history of March Township, both as an early pioneer family and in terms of their extensive involvement in municipal politics, the education system, local business and the Anglican Church. It was, however, Thomas A. Richardson, the fourth son of Frederick and Ann Richardson, who rebuilt the existing stone farmhouse after a fire destroyed many of the Richardson family homes in 1870. Four generations of the Richardson family lived in this house between 1871 and 2008, farming its land and the surrounding 100 acres for more than 175 years.
