21 December 2016City doles out $200k to 49 community organizations for Ottawa 2017 events_ (Via Ottawa 2017) _ ** Ottawa – ** The Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Mayor Jim Watson, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC and the City of Ottawa, are happy to announce that 49 community organizations will receive a total of $200,000 in funding to plan unique celebrations throughout the nation’s capital for Canada’s 150thanniversary. The call for submissions was launched in November 2015, when it was announced that Ottawa 2017 would quadruple the funding available through the City of Ottawa’s Civic Events Funding Program, an existing grants program that helps neighbourhoods mark statutory holidays throughout the year. Because of the investment boost, from January to December 2017, community groups in all 23 City wards will highlight local culture with an increased quantity, quality and diversity of community programming. “We’re very proud that communities in every ward will be part of the celebrations for our country’s 150thanniversary,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Residents and visitors will be able to get a taste of our culture in the heart of each community, as we celebrate everything that is great about our country through these close to 50 bigger and better local celebrations.” In addition to funding, organizations will receive special pageantry kits to add an Ottawa 2017 flair to their events. “It’s essential to engage all sectors of the community when planning a celebration of the magnitude of Ottawa 2017,” said Guy Laflamme, Executive Director of the Ottawa 2017 Bureau. “We’re thrilled with the response we’ve received from local groups and equally happy that Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations will resonate in every Ottawa community with dynamic and varied experiences.” All events are open to the public and presented free of charge.
