Buffalo prankster offers Chiarelli NHL win

The 20-minute phone chat was long for two busy mayors, and its light and cordial tone fit the occasion: Their two cities were in a head-to-head battle in the National Hockey League playoffs.

In the end, Ottawa Mayor Bob Chiarelli agreed to consider a sweet but sleazy offer from his Buffalo counterpart, Byron Brown: The Sabres would lose to the Senators if Ottawa would send some high-tech jobs to the struggling rust-belt city.

As it turned out, “Mayor Brown” was a reporter from the Buffalo Beast, a satirical newspaper, which posted a recording of the Tuesday call on its website yesterday.
