25 November 2014 / #affordable housing #City Alliance to End Homelessness 11th annual Community Forum on Ending Homelessness brings national and local experts togetherThe Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa will hold its 11th Annual Community Forum on Ending Homelessness on Wednesday, November 26, 2014. The day begins (at 8:45 am) with a municipal proclamation of National Housing Day in Ottawa by City of Ottawa Councillor Mark Taylor, on behalf of Mayor Jim Watson.The event creates links between researchers and housing/homelessness practitioners – and this year includes a special focus on a Housing First approach.The morning keynote features one of Canada’s leading experts on housing and homelessness, Eric Latimer, professor of Psychiatry at McGill University. Dr. Latimer will provide an economic analysis of the findings of the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s four-year At Home/Chez Soi study which examined the impact of a Housing First approach for vulnerable Canadians.Dr. Latimer’spresentation will be followed by a panel of local experts (10:15 am) examining Ottawa’s current housing needs for vulnerable people and ways in which they obtain housing in the city.Following a series of afternoon concurrent workshops, the day ends with an afternoon plenary, featuringSusan McGee, CEO of Edmonton’s Homeward Trust, speaking on lessons learned in implementing Edmonton’s 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness(adopted in 2009) and its Housing First programs.
