OTTAWA-GATINEAU – An impressive team performance on the road last weekend has earned a pair of Ottawa REDBLACKS recognition as Shaw CFL Top Performers for Week 19 to go along with the club’s second-division East Division title, the Canadian Football League announced Tuesday.
Linebacker Taylor Reed and running back Mossis Madu Jr. turned in stellar performances on either side of the ball against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on October 29 as the REDBLACKS picked up a 23-10 win to claim top spot in the East Division and punch their ticket to the Division Final. Reed, who was signed by the REDBLACKS this season after being released by Calgary 10 games into the campaign, set a new career high with 12 defensive tackles in Winnipeg. Madu also set a career high against the Bombers, carrying the ball 21 times for 125 yards and a touchdown.
CFL Top Performers – Week 19:
1 – Solomon Elimimian (BC Lions)
2 – Taylor Reed (Ottawa REDBLACKS)
3 – Mossis Madu Jr. (Ottawa REDBLACKS)
Reed is proving to be a savvy pickup by the REDBLACKS as the Beaumont, Texas native has recorded 38 defensive tackles, two on special teams and one sack in seven games with Ottawa. With the 41 tackles he had in 10 games with Calgary before coming east, Reed is just two tackles short of tying his career high of 81 set in 2015. Meanwhile, Madu is making the best of the opportunity given to him this season thanks to a spat of injuries to Ottawa running backs, including a season-ending knee injury to William Powell during the pre-season. Madu has 490 yards with three touchdowns on 92 carries.
The REDBLACKS will close out their regular season schedule at home on Friday night when the Blue Bombers come to TD Place. The team will get a bye through the first round of the CFL playoffs before hosting the East Final at TD Place on November 20 at 1 p.m.
