TIMELAPSE: Ottawa over the past 32 years

A lot has changed in Ottawa since 1984 and now there’s a simple way to see it happen right in front of you.

Google recently released its Google Earth Timelapse , a compilation of satellite imagery across the world. It allows users to see a 32-year timelapse of any location on earth.

We plugged in Ottawa, which is embedded below.

Of course, in 1984 Ottawa was nowhere near the megacity it was today. It was long before the 2001 amalgamation, so the region was made up of a bunch of smaller cities, such as Kanata, Nepean and the old City of Ottawa. In the outskirts, there were townships such as Goulbourn.

In the west end, you can watch communities like Barrhaven, Kanata and Stittsville balloon. In the east end, watch how much Orlèans has expanded.

Across the river in Gatineau, the changes are even more pronounced.
