Starting this week, the City of Ottawa will install 31 new artist-designed bike racks on Bank Street between Laurier Avenue and Somerset Street as part of the Bank Street North Rehabilitation Project.
The public art bike racks reflect the unique identity and character of the neighbourhood and exhibit the talent and diversity of Ottawa’s artists. As a series, they encourage cycling and movement up and down the street as people explore and discover the clever and exceptional designs and make connections to the vibrant community.
In 2008, the City of Ottawa’s Public Art Program called upon local artists to submit unique designs for cut out stainless steel panels for bicycle racks. Thirty designs by emerging and established artists were chosen, and the artists were awarded an honorarium for their winning designs. Each design will be produced three times to total 90 racks, which will ultimately extend from Laurier Avenue to the Queensway.
The artists who provided winning designs for the bike rack panels are:
Becky Armstrong, Sylvie Bordeleau, Gail Bourgeois, Jennifer Daigle, Dawn Dale, Kathryn Drysdale, Lesya Granger, Christopher Griffin, Marion Jean Hall, Deidre Hierlihy, Sean Hyatt, Marie Lugli,
Roy Lumagbas, José Mansilla-Miranda, Don McVeigh, Christopher Racette, Bozica Radjenovic,
Michael Reynolds & Chandler Swain, Mana Rouholamini, Karen Russell, John Sekerka, Zeena Sileem, Joanna Swim, Lisa Thomas, Amy Thompson, Howie Tsui, and Eric Walker
These bike racks beautify the street, make art accessible to everyone, and encourage urban cycling. The Public Art Program’s Bicycle Rack Project supports the Ottawa arts community by providing opportunities to local artists and showcasing their talent on our streets.
All 90 bike racks are scheduled to be installed by late fall 2009.
