Summary: The NCC is pleased to host artists from COquitlam and Whistler, B.C., Trois-Rivieres, Quebec as well as Fredericton and Caraquet, New Brunswick, at the Avenue of the 2009 Cultural Capitals of Canada.
The National Capital Commission (NCC), in partnership with the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Cultural Capitals of Canada program, is pleased to host artists from Coquitlam and Whistler, British Columbia, Trois-Rivières, Quebec as well as Fredericton and Caraquet, New Brunswick, at the Avenue of the 2009 Cultural Capitals of Canada, as part of the Canada Day celebrations held in Canada’s Capital Region.
Launched in 2002 by the Department of Canadian Heritage, Cultural Capitals of Canada is a national program that recognizes and supports Canadian municipalities that are integrating arts and culture into community life. The Avenue of the Cultural Capitals of Canada allows Canada Day festival-goers to discover Canada’s cultural heritage through displays and demonstrations by artists from these diverse and vibrant municipalities.
At Major’s Hill Park, from 10 am to 5 pm:
Coquitlam, British Columbia

- Kristina Cunningham, cedar weaving

Whistler, British Columbia
- Vanessa Stark and Oliver Roy, acrylic painters
- Chili Thom, acrylic painter
Trois-Rivières, Quebec
- Marie-Ève Proteau, artistic furniture
- François Poisson, storyteller
- Judith Picard, jewellery designer
Fredericton, New Brunswick
- Brigitte Clavette, metalsmithing and Salmon Run project

At Jacques-Cartier Park:
Caraquet, New Brunswick
The public will be able to admire a big dragon and giant heads created for Caraquet’s Tintamarre and make a musical instrument on site. At 12:30 pm, everyone is invited to take part in the Tintamarre, the noisiest musical parade ever.
Whistler, British Columbia
Hip hop sensation Animal Nation invites the public to catch the west coast vibe during their shows at 11:45 pm and 3:15 pm.

Celebrations organized on July 1st in the Capital Region to celebrate Canada’s 142nd birthday will include free activities, workshops, demonstrations and performances, as well as noon and evening concerts, all taking place on both sides of the Ottawa River. This year, in addition to looking forward to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Canada Day festivities will highlight important historical milestones, including the 225th anniversary of New Brunswick, the 60th anniversary of Newfoundland and Labrador joining Confederation, the 10th anniversary of Nunavut, the 100th anniversary of aviation in Canada, and the 70th anniversary of the National Film Board.
