Beginning at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on Dec. 19 and ending on Dec. 23 in four cities, 10 world championship competing countries will play the following schedule of pre-competition games: Toronto (Air Canada Centre): Friday, Dec. 19: Canada vs. Sweden at 7 p.m. “This world junior event has always been a community effort, with contributions coming from many organizations involved in the game in Hockey Country and also from the different levels of government,” said Cyril Leeder, vice-chair of the host organizing committee. “We were extremely pleased to facilitate bringing these very important and key preparation pre-competition games to communities across Ontario. With the record-setting attendance we’ve already established for the championship and anticipated record television viewership, we’re proud to bring the world’s best juniors in person to an additional 75,000 hockey fans.” "The world juniors will be one of the largest sporting events our city and province has ever witnessed, and the McGuinty government was pleased to provide $2 million to help attract the tournament to our province,” said Jim Watson, Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and MPP, Ottawa West-Nepean “The 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship hockey tournament will bring people from all over the world to the City of Ottawa. We are prepared to host the world and as well are committed to providing an exceptional venue for the next generation of superstar hockey players,” said Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien. “These training camps will only add to the hype that will come to full realization on Boxing Day later this year and again when Canada wins its fifth straight gold medal.” Hockey Canada will hold a selection camp for more than 35 Team Canada hopefuls in Ottawa from Dec. 11-15. Canada’s final team will then move its camp and daily practices to CFB (Canadian Forces Base) Petawawa, which is located about 150 km outside of Ottawa, and then travel to its pre-competition games in Toronto, Mississauga and Hamilton. Each country is expected to arrive in its host city on or about Thursday, Dec. 18. Teams will be practising and taking part in their exhibition games before moving to Ottawa on Wednesday, Dec. 24, for the start of the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship. The countries and their host cities are as follows (city – country): Barrie/Finland; Brampton/Czech Republic; Brockville/Latvia; CFB Petawawa/Canada; Kingston/Russia and the United States; Kitchener/Slovakia; Mississauga/Sweden; Oshawa/Kazakhstan and Ottawa/Germany, “The world juniors itself has been projected to provide an economic benefit of not less than $45 million and as high as $60 million,” added Leeder. “We’re anticipating that these added training camps and games throughout Ontario will bring in many millions more for the communities and generate a lot of enthusiasm for the tourney.” The 31-game schedule sees Canada open against the Czech Republic for the second year in a row on Friday, Dec. 26, at 7:30 p.m. The matinee game at SBP Arena will see the United States meet Germany at 3:30 p.m. The championship’s first game features Russia and Latvia at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 26 at the Civic Centre, which is also where the all-Scandinavian matchup between Finland and Sweden takes place later that day at 6:30 p.m. All gold, silver and bronze ticket packages, for a total of more than 440,000 tickets or 95 per cent of capacity, have been sold. The 31-game packages were sold out prior to the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic, and the remaining 3,500 17-game packages were picked up during the championship following Canada’s fourth consecutive gold-medal win on January 5, 2008. The 23,249 remaining tickets are in available suites at both venues and are required to fill ticket commitments for the IIHF, Hockey Canada, and sponsors.
