Tools 4 School

News • Posted by Child & Youth Friendly Ottawa on August 01, 2008

Being equipped with the right supplies has been proven to help children succeed in school, but there are hundreds of children in Ottawa who are in need of school supplies. Child & Youth Friendly Ottawa’s Tools 4 School program collects school supplies and donations over the summer so that local school-aged kids in need go back to school with the supplies they need! The Ottawa community is anticipating an even greater demand for school supplies this year due to rising cost of living. Since 2000 CAYFO has given out over 16,000 backpacks to children and youth in need!

The Ottawa Public Library (OPL) is looking to supplement the only school supply that the Tools 4 School program cannot provide: a library card. The Every Kid a Card campaign has the means to fill kid’s backpacks with the resources necessary for those students to succeed academically and socially. Over the past four years, 11,897 children have obtained Library cards during the EKaC campaign. By getting or renewing a library card during the campaign, participants receive incentives such as pizza vouchers, swimming passes and ballots to win prizes such as laptops and gift certificates from corporate partners. We are hoping to help CAYFO in combating low self-esteem and diminished school performance in our children

Two goals…

1.      Supply children and youth from kindergarten to grade 12 who are living in poverty in Ottawa with essential school items.

2.      Give children, youth, and adults of all ages a meaningful opportunity to help others by donating time, supplies or donations to the program.

Support we are looking for…

·         Financial Donations to purchase supplies – made to Child & Youth Friendly Ottawa

·         Donations of School Supplies – collection boxes at all Ottawa Public Libraries, CTV building, Les Suites Hotel and at Your Credit Union.

·         Volunteer support on supply sorting days (various dates and times in August)

Supplies we collect…

  • pencils
  • notebooks
  • calculators
  • backpacks
  • lunch bags
  • doutangs
  • pencil cases
  • highlighters
  • pencil sharpeners
  • geometry sets
  • pens
  • scissors
  • lined paper
  • scotch tape
  • rulers
  • binders
  • glue sticks
  • liquid school glue
  • coloured pencils
  • markers
  • erasers

No student’s academic success should be impeded by financial status.
