The National Capital Commission is pleased to announce that it has received Governor in Council approval to acquire 35.64 hectares (88 acres) of private property on Carman Road in Gatineau Park.
“The acquisition of this land on Carman Road reaffirms the National Capital Commission’s commitment to preventing further development in Gatineau Park,” said Marie Lemay, NCC Chief Executive Officer. “Since becoming aware of the Carman Road project in January, I said that the NCC would take this seriously. This acquisition is the proof that we have done so.”
The NCC became aware of a housing development project planned for Carman Road and initiated discussions with the vendor. The NCC concluded an agreement in mid-March with the vendor to acquire 35.64 hectares of vacant land. Since the Board of Directors’ reconfirmation of Gatineau Park boundaries in April 2008, NCC teams have worked to further refine the priorities for acquisition identified by the Gatineau Park Master Plan (2005) and are currently developing an updated inventory of the 605 hectares of privately owned land within the park boundaries. The objective of this approach is to identify privately owned properties that, based on the Gatineau Park Master Plan priorities and the NCC’s budget envelope, could be acquired.
