Yannick Nézet-Séguin returns to lead the NAC Orchestra with Marc-André Hamelin as soloist on May 22-23

Canadian conducting sensation Yannick Nézet-Séguin returns to lead the National Arts Centre Orchestra for the first time since he was appointed successor to Valery Gergiev at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and named Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra – all while the young conductor has barely entered his 30s. Nézet-Séguin is joined for these Mark Motors Audi Signature Series concerts on Thursday, May 22 and Friday, May 23 at 20:00 in the NAC’s Southam Hall by Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin who will perform Gershwin’s jazz-infused Piano Concerto in F, full of infectious melodies and rhythmic vitality. Nézet-Séguin will also lead Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 filled throughout with innovative, arresting episodes.

The programme opens with Exquisite Fires, written in 1993 by Canadian composer Linda Bouchard – the first of several works commissioned by the NAC while she was the NAC Orchestra’s Composer-in-Residence from 1992 to 1995. The NAC Orchestra and its then Artistic Director Trevor Pinnock performed Exquisite Fires on its European Tour in 1995, and recorded the work along with four others by Bouchard on a Marquis label CD entitled Exquisite Fires released in 1998.

Linda Bouchard, who during her residency at the NAC played an active role in stimulating understanding of, and interest and involvement in new music, will return to the NAC to give Musically Speaking Pre-Concert Talks in French both nights at 19:00. Admission is free.

The Toronto Star recently wrote that Yannick Nézet-Séguin “shows every sign of becoming the Great Canadian Conductor for whom this country’s classical music buffs have been waiting.” He begins his prestigious new positions in Rotterdam and London at the beginning of the 2008-09 season. He continues to lead the Orchestre Métropolitainin Montreal, where he has been Artistic Director since 2000. He will make his Salzburg Festival opera debut in the summer 2008, and the 2009-10 season will see his Metropolitan Opera debut in New York. He made his NAC Orchestra debut in 2006.

Pianist Marc-André Hamelin is internationally renowned for his musical virtuosity and refined pianism. This season includes recitals at Lincoln Center, Chicago Symphony Presents, and the Celebrity Series of Boston, among other dates throughout Europe and North America.  His recent two-disc set of Haydn Piano Sonatas was named on “Best of 2007” lists in The Boston Globe, The New York Times, and the New Yorker magazine, and earned him his fourth Grammy nomination.
