The City of Ottawa praised six outstanding young members of our community at the 10th annual 9-1-1 Children’s Achievement Awards. Joining in their tribute, Mayor, City Councillors and emergency chiefs honoured the boys and girls for their courage in facing difficult situations.
In each case, the children thought clearly and acted responsibly. Katherine Brown, age 12, noticed a suspicious person circling her home and called 9-1-1 for police assistance. Paramedics came to the rescue when Danny Neveu Karimpour, age 10, contacted 9-1-1 when his mother had chest pains and fainted.
Mayor Larry O’Brien applauded the award recipients for their quick thinking, and recognized the important role teachers and parents play in educating children in responding to emergency situations.
“I commend the parents, families and schools for teaching our young people how to think clearly in a crisis and dial 9-1-1 when faced with an emergency situation,” said Mayor Larry O'Brien. “Congratulations to today's recipients who have shown tremendous courage and acted quickly during difficult circumstances.”
Established in 1998, the Children’s 9-1-1 Achievement Awards recognizes children, who use the service effectively. The City continues to educate residents of all ages on how and when to use 9-1-1. They encourage everyone to use 9-1-1 in any situation where a fire, medical emergency or crime-in-progress jeopardizes the safety of people or property.
“I would like to congratulate not only today’s recipients for their ability to react responsibly in an emergency situation, but to the emergency personnel for their dedication in helping save lives,” said Councillor Diane Deans, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee.
The City reminds residents to give the dispatcher as much information as possible when placing a call to 9-1-1. Specify the emergency service needed, indicate the emergency location, and always provide a name, address and telephone number. When calling 9-1-1, the City would like to remind residents, it is not necessary to dial the 613 area code. For Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) users, be prepared to provide an accurate location to assist the operator in directing their call to the correct 9-1-1 Centre as quickly as possible.
