8 POSTED ON May 03, 2008 OTTAWA Funds raised at the 6th Annual Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion, presented by Scotiabank, will have a greater impact than ever before in Ottawa.
OTTAWA Funds raised at the 6th Annual Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion, presented by Scotiabank, will have a greater impact than ever before in Ottawa as more than half of the funds raised at the event will stay in the community to support local projects that allow people with spinal cord injury lead active and healthy lives.
"We are very excited to announce that 100% of the net proceeds from Wheels In Motion will be directed towards helping improve the quality of life for people living spinal cord injury," said Velma McColl. "The majority of the money we raise on June 8 will stay in Ottawaand will make a dramatic difference in the lives of our friends, family, and neighbors."
In previous years, proceeds from Wheels In Motion were split evenly between research and Quality of Life initiatives. Under the new funding formula, just over half of net funds raised will support local customized solutions to improve the quality of life of people with SCI in the community where the funds are raised. The remainder will be targeted at "innovations" that may benefit for all Canadians with SCI, and support for people with SCI who want to take part in promising approved clinical trials. The Rick Hansen Foundation will continue to support spinal cord injury research and the search for a cure through other Foundation initiatives.
Since the inception of Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion in 2003, Canadians have raised $7.6 million. These funds have supported more than 700 quality of life projects in communities across Canada to provide solutions for men, women and children with spinal cord injury.
The people of Ottawa are encouraged to participate in the Wheels In Motion event on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Carleton University. This year's event will feature the Scotiabank Wheelchair Challenge, which is a fun and exciting experience where teams compete in a series of demanding activities designed to foster a better understanding of what it is like to navigate through life in a wheelchair. Competitors will race against the clock through an obstacle course and test their dexterity, wheelchair hockey skills, and painting abilities.
