TAKE A FIELD TRIP AROUND THE WORLD WITH
AWESOME INDIES
Ottawa’s First Annual Film Festival for Children and Youth begins May 8th
Ottawa, Ontario, April 25th, 2008 – Not your average
Cineplex fare, Awesome Indies is about adding some flavour, variety and
worldliness into the average movie-going experience for local young people.
Presented by World-Inter-Action Mondiale,
Awesome Indies is Ottawa's first
annual film festival for children and youth between the ages of 6 – 18.
Offering 15 films over four days, the festival will take
audiences on a tour of seven different countries, including Germany, Finland,
Morocco, Senegal and France. Also featuring a number of award-winning
independent films from Canada and the U.S., Awesome
Indies offers kids a rare glimpse into the non-commercial side of film.
Opening night features Paula's
Gift, an internationally acclaimed film from Germany whose 11-year-old
heroine's stolen diary launches her on an adventure involving pickpockets,
child traffickers and an unlikely prince. Winner of Best Film at the Kinder
Film Festival in Germany, Paula's Gift
succeeds as both a suspenseful crime caper and an empowering story of how young
people are capable of standing up to injustice when others turn away.
Based on a Scandinavian fairy tale, another highlight of
the festival is Pelican Man – a
quirky, surreal tale of a pelican who, with the help of 10-year-old Emil, tries
to live as a human. Described as "profoundly funny, profoundly Finnish," Pelican Man is a whimsical tale of
friendship and the transformative power of the imagination.
Also featuring Oscar-nominated Binta and the Great Idea from Senegal and local hit Await the Freight, as well asa wide variety of short films and youth
workshops, Awesome Indies is a sure
bet for film buffs of all ages.
Film screenings will take place at various venues around
the city from Thursday, May 8 – Sunday, May 11, and includes a day of free
films and a workshop with Artengine at the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa. The
festival also offers a special deal for families on Sunday, May 11th; Moms don't have to pay when they come on
