2 February 15, 2008 The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to invite residents and visitors to take part in the third and final weekend of the 30th edition of Winterlude, Canada’s winter celebration, which kicked-off on February 1 and ends on February 17.

Again this weekend, residents and visitors will be able to learn about Canadian northern traditions and be entertained at four official sites in the Capital Region. Here is an overview of some of the activities taking place during the final weekend of Winterlude.
American Express Snowbowl A dynamic 12-minute opening number will kick-off the evening shows at the American Express® Snowbowl. Created by the NCC, this unique number combines performances by Swing, the Campbell Brothers, giant puppets, Inuit cultural performers, breakdancers, drummers, and spectacular lighting and pyrotechnical effects.
On Friday, February 15, at 7 pm, the evening show presented at the American Express Snowbowl will feature Joel Plaskett Emergency.Nominated for a 2008 JUNO Award, and recipient of multiple East Coast Music Awards, this indie rock band is sure to have the crowd dancing.
On Saturday, February 16, everyone is invited to celebrate the 30th edition of Winterlude and relive the late 70's with April Wine, a Canadian rock band who has kept audiences moving for more than 30 years.
The American Express Snowbowl will also offer daytime programming. Families will enjoy the Mascot Jamboree, on Saturday, February 16 at noon, when the Ice Hogs, Winterlude's mascots, and their friends entertain the crowds. On Sunday, February 17, at noon, the whole family can enjoy a performance by the Royal Canadian Military Band.
Casino du Lac-Leamy Crystal Garden at Confederation Park Members of the public will have an opportunity to create their own ice carvings with the help of professionals from the Canadian Ice Carvers' Society on Saturday, February 16, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. (Registration is required, and participants must be at least 18 years of age.) Visitors to the Casino du Lac-Leamy Crystal Lounge will have the opportunity to meet experts from the Canadian Space Agency this weekend. Astronaut Steve MacLean will be on hand on Saturday, February 16, at 1 pm, while Dextre Developer Daniel Ray will be present on Sunday, February 17, at 1 pm.
Festival-goers will enjoy watching local media personalities trying their hand at ice-carving on Sunday, February 17, from 1 pm to 3 pm. Members of the public can vote for their favourite sculpture at 3 pm. Again this weekend, Confederation Park will also be a popular evening destination during the 'Sub-Zero DJ Happenin', featuring DJs who will get the audience moving. DJ Rise Ashen will be on hand Friday, February 15, from 8:30 pm to 10 pm, while DJ Jaxpratt will be in the spotlight on Saturday, February 16, from 8:30 pm to 10 pm.
On Saturday and Sunday, visitors to Confederation Park can learn about Inuit culture with various interactive games, cultural and language workshops, and an interpretive display of Inuit clothing.
Sun Life Snowflake Kingdom at Jacques-Cartier Park Equipped with giant snow slides, a labyrinth made of snow, the Village of Days Gone By, the Teletoon Fun Zone, and the Gatineau Place play area, Jacques-Cartier Park continues to be a popular destination for families.
This is the final weekend for the public to admire massive snow sculptures created during the National Snow Sculpture Competition, presented in collaboration with the Ville de Gatineau. Inspired by this year's theme, "Northern Creations," thirteen teams of sculptors were challenged to create snowy masterpieces interpreting a winter-themed literary work, visual creation or musical composition from their home province or territory.
Once again this weekend, members of the public will be able to try their hand at ice fishing thanks to a collaboration with the Quebec Ministry of Natural Resources and the CREDDO and its partners, this Saturday and Sunday, from 9 am to 4 pm. Children between 8 and 12 years will be able to take part in an introductory ice fishing workshop presented on Saturday and Sunday at 3 pm.
On Sunday, February 17 at 3:30 pm, residents and visitors are invited to join the NCC Winterlude team as we bid Farewell to the Ice Hogs, before our friendly mascots embark on their long journey to Canada's Far North.
Rideau Canal Skateway Recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's largest skating rink, the Rideau Canal Skateway is presently open from the National Arts Centre to Dows Lake. Again this weekend, the Skateway will host a variety of activities. Skaters at Dows Lake are invited to stop at the Ice Café, which highlights both the Rideau Canal's recent designation by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and the 400th anniversary of Quebec City, or at the Scout Village, which will feature 90 years of winter camping. Skaters will also want to stop at Concord Street to learn about Thermablade skates, a Canadian innovation in heated blades this Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 pm. The First Nations Village of Traditions at Pig Island will also be a popular area this Saturday and Sunday, as everyone can participate in traditional Aboriginal winter games from 10 am to 4 pm. Residents and visitors are invited to take advantage of the shuttle service offered by OC Transpo and STO ($), which links Winterlude's official sites. Stops are sign-posted.
