A number of sales companies have recently been reported to target Ottawa residents to “test” their tap water and arrange for a site visit.  Some have falsely indicated that the water is contaminated with human waste and is unsafe for consumption. Often, the follow-up visit is a sales pitch designed to sell expensive water filtration equipment.  These door-to-door sales efforts are not endorsed by or affiliated with the City of Ottawa. Ottawa’s drinking water supply continues to be safe and of high quality, and does not require further treatment in the home.

The City of Ottawa tests the water quality at every stage of treatment, and throughout the distribution system to ensure the high quality of drinking water for Ottawa residents.  Each year 125,000 water quality tests covering over 300 test parameters are conducted through certified laboratories, and all test results are made available to the public by calling 311 and asking for the Water Quality Information Line and many are available on ottawa.ca.  Ottawa drinking water meets all federal and provincial drinking water standards, and is considered one of the best in the country.  Ottawa was ranked as “excellent” through the 2007 provincial drinking water inspection program.

City staff are currently coordinating a number of in-home water quality sampling visits.  These visits are a requirement of new provincial regulations.  All visits will be via pre-arranged appointments.  In all cases the water technicians will clearly identify themselves as City of Ottawa staff with visible photo-identification.

If you would like to find out more about Ottawa’s drinking water supply or facts about in-home treatment filters, please call our Water Quality Information Line at 613-580-2424 ext 22300 or by calling 311 and asking for the Water Quality Information Line.
