Sport has the power to change the
world. Sawmill Creek Elementary school students believe that, and will launch
their year long campaign in partnership with “Right to Play” organization. The
“Right to Play” organization aims to raise awareness of sport as an innovative
tool for addressing critical development issues, such as the lack of basic
education, and health information, and the impact of conflict.
On Thursday September 27, the
students and staff of Sawmill Creek Elementary will be decorating red balloons
similar to the red ball that “Right to Play” uses to encourage healthy, holistic
child development, through educational play. The students and staff will be
releasing red balloons into the air to show their commitment as a school
community to look after one another throughout the upcoming school year.
The “Right to Play” organization has been using the red ball symbol, to
represent its mandate since 2002. For the first time the red balls will be
available for sale, at Adidas outlets world-wide. This global initiative is to
create awareness of the organization and the important role of sport for
development in some of the most disadvantaged areas around the world.
Sawmill Creek Elementary, Vice-Principal Merrill Mathews says the
message being sent to his students, and to everyone in the city is that we must
take care of each other and ourselves. On Thursday, September 27, the students
and staff will be working in their Cross Graded Teams, which are mixed groups of
students from grades 1 to 8, and led by Grade 7 and 8 students, and a staff
mentor. They will be talking about, and understanding the importance in
preventing bullying before it happens - by looking out for one another
