Kids everywhere agree that animation rules! Now kids and teens can explore the world of animation with an exciting array of screenings and activities at this year’s Ottawa International Animation Festival, taking place September 19 – 23.
Kids and teens eager to roll up their sleeves for hands-on animation activities will love the free National Film Board workshops at the National Gallery of Canada. The "Animacat’s House" workshop focuses on clay animation. Kids will start by learning animation basics, then build their own characters, write a storyboard and shoot a short film in 3D sets! The workshop will end with a screening of the kids collectively created film. Teens can enjoy the "Postsynchronization" workshop where they can try 3D clay animation, and imitate the work of the artists who created Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run. Teens will design and build a character, make it talk and watch the results on screen.
If you have, or know a teen interested in animation or interested in becoming an animator there are a number of activities they will want to get in on. Make sure they attend Career Day at the National Gallery on Thursday, September 20th. Individuals and school groups are welcome to attend free screenings and informative presentations by all the leading animation schools from across Canada. Groups must pre-register by calling (613) 232-8769. They will also want to get a FREE Adobe® Toon Apprentice Pass, valid for five film screenings at the National Arts Centre on Saturday, September 22. At the same time teens can check out the Animarket where they can visit with more animation schools. Visit www.animationfestival.ca to register for a pass.
Animation Celebration offers Ottawa-area elementary school children (ages 5-12) an introduction to the art of animation. Janet Perlman, Oscar® Nominated animator will screen her film Bullydance and lead a discussion about the issue of bullying. The free presentations occur on Wednesday, September 19th at 11am and 1pm at the National Gallery. Schools must pre-register by calling (613) 232-8769.
Families with kids of all ages will find lots of great animation on display during the Festival. The highlight for families is the Kids Competition at 11am on Saturday, September 22 at the National Arts Centre. It's a real film festival experience as you can watch the best new animation from around the world with a jury made up of local kids! There is also the Kid's TV competition featuring the best new TV animation from around the world. The funny and visually dynamic work of Dušan Vukotic and the engaging yet thought provoking work of Janet Perlman are also good programs for the young audience. On Sunday, September 23, come and see the new Goofy short by Disney and watch a presentation on how it was made. This event happens at 1pm at the Empire Cinema in the Rideau Centre.
Older kids and teens interested in animation will enjoy the four part UPA presentations and the Joanna Quinn retrospectives. The competition screenings are fine for more mature teens with the exception of competition 3, which is strictly for adults.
All OIAF youth outreach initiatives have been made possible from a grant from the TELUS Ottawa Community Board.
OIAF 07 will be held September 19 – 23, 2007 in Ottawa. Events at the OIAF include screenings, panels, workshops parties and the Television Animation Conference. The OIAF is a leading competitive animation film festival, featuring cutting edge programming, catering to industry executives, trend setting artists, students and animation fans. For more information about the OIAF and this year’s programming, please visit www.animationfestival.ca.
