Road Safety Improvements Will Benefit Commuters In The Ottawa Area
OTTAWA, Sept. 7 /CNW/ - The Ontario government is investing $4.5 million to repair Highway 417 and improve road safety and traffic flow for commuters in Ottawa, Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield announced today. "Maintaining our highways is critical to Ontario's prosperity," said Cansfield. "These improvements will benefit 144,000 commuters and families who use this stretch of the Queensway every day." Highway 417 will be repaved for ten kilometres between Woodroffe Avenue and Nicholas Street. Additional work includes resurfacing four ramps in the westbound direction and paving the median and outside shoulders. "This is the single largest provincial facility in Ottawa and people depend on it. I am proud that the Government of Ontario is investing so much to make Ottawa a vibrant community," said Ottawa Centre MPP Richard Patten. "This investment is great news," added MPP Madeleine Meilleur for Ottawa - Vanier. "Keeping the Queensway in good repair will benefit the many tourists visiting our nation's capital and ensure our commuters a safe ride." The contract was awarded to Lafarge Paving and Construction Ltd. of Peterborough and work is expected to be completed in late September 2006. To minimize impact to traffic, all work will be performed at night. Signs will be posted to advise drivers of short-term lane closures.
