LOVING AT 16
Greece, 2004, 102 min. Director: Constantinos Haralambous
Rural
Greece in the 1980s. The story revolves around a group of 15
year-old kids.Parents, relatives, and their friends emerge and unfold
around them. Antigone comes to the village with her brother when
her father, a police officer, is transferred there.
Her arrival
turns the orderly world of Alexis and his buddies upside down.
Alexis the dreamer is fascinated by her rebellious
character, and it is not long before he falls in love. A debut feature from Haralambous.

LOVELORN
Turkey, 2004, 143 min. Director: Yavuz Turgul
Lovelorn's
central figure is Nazim (Sener Sen), a retired teacher returning to
Istanbul after a lifetime of teaching in rural primary schools. He's a
member of the fiercely patriotic yet secular liberal generation whose
values are increasingly under siege from Turkey's version of yuppiedom
- represented here by his resentful children, Mehmet and Piraye. (They
want him to sell his property and give them the money, but he can't
face kicking out the poor family who rent it from him.) Bored and
lonely, Nazim takes to cab driving, and finds a new focus for his
affections on troubled single mother Dunya: a bar balladeer being
stalked by her violent husband. No prizes for guessing
where the
story goes, or for sitting through the "you were never there for me"
scenes between Nazim and his kids - thereby proving that you don't have
to come from Hollywood to whip up a frenzy of saccharine-tainted
emotions. But Turgul's straightforward
storytelling keeps things moving, and Sen is a quietly engaging performer at the heart of the matter.

REMAKE
Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2003, 108 min. Director: Dino Mustafic
This is a true story about friendship that survives tests brought upon by the war, a story about tragic love
and blind hatred, about dreams crushed and dreams come true, about dishonesty and humanity, about sublime nobleness
and
primitive passions, about hypocrisy and bitter truths, about the ironic
repetitiveness of Balkan history. Vengeance or forgiveness? The first
feature film produced and shot in Bosnia about the four-year siege of
Sarajevo, this is an outstanding moral and artistic film.

MILA FROM MARS
Bulgaria, 2003, 95 min. Director: Zornista Sophia
A 16-year old girl runs away from a dangerous man and gets into a faraway village near the border. Soon she finds out the only
inhabitants there - nine old men and women -make their living by growing marihuana and the village is actually an
illegal plantation belonging to the man she runs away from. However, she decides to stay
there and nothing remains the same. A girl is afraid of her past, both disgusting and
attracting her. She is afraid of her present, both suffocating her and giving her wings. And
she is afraid of the future as it projects both her nightmares and her dreams. This film
is about the only "bullet against fear" - love. It also states that when you are
searching for yourself, you have to look into people's eyes so you can find yourself in the eyes of somebody.
Wed/Mer, July 13 juillet, 19:00
LOVING GLANCES
Serbia/Montenegro, 2003, 97 min. Director: Srdjan Karanovic
A beautiful and bittersweet romantic comedy set in besieged Belgrade. The
film is the story of Labud, a young student set adrift on the tide of refugees created
by the ethnic strife in the region, and Romana, a beautiful girl from the wrong side of
the ethnic divide, who meet and fall in love as displaced people in Belgrade in the
mid-nineties. As they fall in love so the outspoken "ghosts" of their past visit them in
the attempt to separate them through a series of hilarious events in which the dead
attempt to interfere with the lives of the living.
Thursday/Jeudi, July 14 juillet, 19:00
BRANCUSI
Romania, 1996, 77 min. Director: Cornel Mihalache
Brancusi is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of modern
sculpture. His landmark carvings introduced abstraction and primitivism into sculpture and
were as influential in the development of modern art as Picasso's paintings. "The
people who call my work "abstract" are imbecils: that which they call "abstract" is
the purest realism whose reality is not represented by exterior form but by the idea
behind it, the essence of the work" -Constatin Brancusi-
