The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to announce that the Rideau Canal Skateway will open in its entirety tomorrow, Friday January 25, at 7 am. Skaters will have access to the full 7.8 kilometre length of the world’s largest outdoor skating rink.

On January 18, the NCC launched the 43rd skating season with 2.2 kilometres of the Skateway open between the Pretoria Bridge and the BankStreet Bridge. An additionnal 3.6 kilometres, from the Bank Street Bridge to Dows Lake, opened January 22.

The Rideau Canal Skateway receives, on average, one million visits each year. The world-famous ice surface becomes one of the official sites for Winterlude, the Capital’s winter celebration, which will be held from February 1 to 18, 2013.

The Rideau Canal, a National Historic Site of Canada and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is owned by Parks Canada. The Skateway portion has been managed by the NCC during winter months since the 1970-1971 season.

In July 2005, Guinness World Records™ of London, England, confirmed that the Rideau Canal Skateway in Canada’s Capital Region is the “Largest Naturally Frozen Ice Rink in the World,” with a maintained skating surface of 165,621 square metres.
