The rebuild of Bank Street in Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood will begin Tuesday, May 24.
Ottawa Greenbelt Construction will be performing the work and detours will be in place effective May 24. The detours will shift traffic to O’Connor Street and related streets.
OC Transpo buses number 1 and 7 will be diverted along O’Connor Street in the Glebe.Southbound buses will take Isabella, O’Connor and Fifth before reconnecting with Bank. Northbound buses will follow a route along Holmwood, O’Connor, Strathcona, Metcalfe and Catherine. For more info on OC Transpo route changes during construction, call 613-741-4390 or visit octranspo.com.
The construction project will replace 100-year-old water and sewer pipes and rebuild the roadway, curbs and sidewalks between the Rideau Canal and the Queensway. The work will improve the drainage of wastewater and stormwater, replace lead pipes and feature an improved streetscape, with elements such as decorative street lights, more trees and public art.
Total cost of the project is $22-million. The project is being accelerated to minimize inconvenience to Glebe residents and businesses.
City staff is working with Capital Ward Councillor David Chernushenko on communication with residents and measures to mitigate the effects of the detour. A traffic safety plan will be implemented that includes crossing guards for children, a radar sign to slow speed of vehicles, and continued use of speed bumps. With the continued input from local residents, other measures such as park safety fencing may also be implemented.
Public access to all businesses along Bank Street will be maintained. Free parking will be available during the construction period at Lansdowne Park when there is not an event taking place.
