Skate Canada announced today that Ottawa will host the BMO Financial Group 2006 Canadian Championships, January 9 - 15, 2006, at the Civic Centre.
On behalf of the City of Ottawa and TEAM Ottawa, Mayor Bob Chiarelli congratulated the City's Lansdowne Park Manager, Rick Haycock, and his team on securing the 2006 Championships.
"We're thrilled to be hosting the 2006 Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Ottawa, and that they will be held at the Civic Centre", said Chiarelli. "Thanks to City staff and to the vision of our former Regional Council and support of our new City Council, Lansdowne Park continues to play a vital role in hosting major events, such as the 2004 Grey Cup and the 2006 Canadian Figure Skating Championships".
TEAM Ottawa Co-Chair and Corel Centre COO, Cyril Leeder, added his congratulations to the City of Ottawa and Lansdowne Park management. "The 2006 Canadian Figure Skating Championships will generate great media exposure and provide an excellent boost to Ottawa's economy at a usually quiet time of the year", he said. "TEAM Ottawa will be working to ensure that we attract more events like this to our City and maximize use of our major facilities, like Lansdowne Park".
Lansdowne Park Manager Rick Haycock notes that 2006 will be a significant year for figure skating, with Canada hosting the World Figure Skating Championships and the Olympic Winter Games also taking place in Torino, Italy. "This will raise the spotlight on and excitement around the 2006 Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Ottawa", says Haycock. "We're proud that we'll be part of this landmark year for the skating community".
Tickets for the BMO Financial Group 2006 Canadian Championships will go on sale at Ticketmaster today.
Skate Canada made the official announcement at a Noon press conference today, from the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario, the site of the 2005 national figure skating championships.
Ottawa last hosted the Championships at the Civic Centre in 1999.
