Summary: The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to release the Gatineau Park Ecosystem Conservation Plan, which will be an essential reference document for Gatineau Park through 2035.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to release the Gatineau Park Ecosystem Conservation Plan, which will be an essential reference document for Gatineau Park through 2035. This plan is the result of a significant collaboration between the scientific community, municipalities and interest groups, over three years of work and consultations.

“Since its creation, Gatineau Park has been an important natural space in the Capital, one we want to pass on to future generations,” says Ms. Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer of the NCC. “The Gatineau Park Ecosystem Conservation Plan not only provides an analysis of the health of the park’s ecosystems, it also makes clear recommendations. We will implement them and are inviting residents and visitors of the Capital Region to join us in this work.”

Since the adoption of the Gatineau Park Master Plan (2005), the NCC has put increased emphasis on the conservation of the park’s ecosystems. In fact, the Master Plan recommended, as a priority, the development of a park ecosystem conservation plan. (The detailed summary of the Gatineau Park Ecosystem Conservation Plan and other information are available at www.canadascapital.gc.ca/gatineau).

“We’re already on our way in this 25-year journey of the Gatineau Park Ecosystem Conservation Plan,” adds Ms. Lemay. “The NCC has already begun to work on some priorities such as the identification of ecological corridors and ecosystems rehabilitation. This summer, we will continue with the Meech Lake shorelines rehabilitation and we will develop a plan for the rehabilitation of the Eardley Escarpment.”

Each year, more than 1.7 million visits are made to Gatineau Park. The vast majority of park users will see no change in their park experience due to the Gatineau Park Ecosystem Conservation Plan. Over the coming months, residents and visitors to the Capital as well as park users will be able to actively monitor the progress on the development of the Recreational Services Plan and the Green Transportation Plan: they will complement the ecosystem conservation plan in the management of the park.

For more information on Gatineau Park, the public may contact the NCC at 819-827-2020, 1-800-465-1867, 613-239-5090 (TTY) or 1-866-661-3530 (toll-free TTY), or visit the NCC’s website at www.canadascapital.gc.ca/gatineau.
