Summary: Sens Foundation president Danielle Robinson announced today a commitment to raise additional funds for Roger's House.

Sens Foundation president Danielle Robinson announced today a commitment to raise additional funds for Roger's House. In 2005, the Sens Foundation made a 15-year commitment to cover an important portion of the annual operating budget for Roger's House and to help build an endowment fund.

Each year, the foundation strives to raise $750,000 to invest in the pediatric palliative care facility. As a result of rising patient needs Roger's House requires an additional $200,000 in funding over the next two years to meet the demand. The decision to increase funding was based on a request from Roger's House.

"We have seen acuity rates increase year after year since we opened the doors in 2006. We count on the Sens Foundation for 30 percent of our operating funds as we would have had to turn families away and cut some of our programs if we couldn't obtain the additional funding," said Lloyd Cowin, executive director of Roger's House.

"Roger's House is the Sens Foundation's charity of choice ," said Robinson. "We have been able to meet our commitments in assisting hundreds of organizations in the community, but the need to increase our allotment to Roger's House is a challenge for both our organization and ultimately for the community. We will be asking our donors and supporters to come through now more than ever."

The Sens Foundation will rely on its annual Roger's House Telethon to help raise additional funds to meet this new commitment. Presented by CN, the telethon will be broadcast on Rogers Sportsnet on Tuesday, March 16, when the Ottawa Senators host the Toronto Maple Leafs. The telethon will air live beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will be hosted by Rob Faulds (Rogers Sportsnet) and Leanne Cusack (CTV Ottawa).

Members of the community will join corporate sponsors will appear throughout the telethon to present funds they have raised through special events or in committed matching programs.

Roger's House provides a comprehensive pediatric respite and palliative care program with elements of pain and symptom management and grief and bereavement counselling. Since opening its doors in May 2006, Roger's House has had more than 900 admissions. Children and youth come to Roger's House for support, to be assessed by the specialized team of medical professionals as well as respite and end of life care. Immediate family can stay to receive support and education in relation to their child's progressive illness. The ultimate goal of a patient's stay is to foster quality family life.

The theme of this year's telethon reflects the mission: We can't change the destination, but we can make the journey a little easier.
