Mrs. Dexter and her maid Peggy must part ways after Mrs. Dexter's divorce. As the women reflect on their lives we are privy to their journey, their losses, and their laughter. Join us as two of Canada’s most celebrated actors —Fiona Reid as Mrs. Dexter and Nicola Cavendish as her “daily” Peggy —bring Joanna McClelland Glass’ endearing new drama to life under the direction of former NAC English Theatre Artistic Director Marti Maraden.
Mrs Dexter and Her Daily showcases the female royalty of Canadian Theatre, artists very familiar to NAC audiences: Nicola Cavendish from such works as Terminal Blues, Shirley Valentine, and For The Pleasure of Seeing Her Again; Fiona Reid, who appeared at the NAC in such works as Hamlet and Humble Boy; playwright Joanna McClelland Glass whose play Trying premiered at the NAC to huge success in 2004; and Marti Maraden, who directed Trying during her tenure as Artistic Director of English Theatre.
Mrs. Dexter and Her Daily is about the very different lives of two women, each distinctly shaped by betrayal, money, love, and friendship. The story begins when the circumstances which first brought them together have changed, signaling perhaps, the end of their professional relationship. The unspoken questions are: will their friendship endure despite vast differences in privilege, personality, and experience? Will the two women learn to let go of the past and embrace their futures?
Joanna McClelland Glass traces the story of Mrs. Dexter and Her Daily back to the nine years she lived in Toronto when, as she puts it, “I had a housekeeper who came from Nova Scotia, barely literate, but she touched me in many ways. She has a hilariously tragic life.” From this, the playwright took the real-life housekeeper and paired her up with the fictional Mrs. Dexter, a Rosedale lady, who is going through the life change of divorce.
"Seasoned pros shine…full of terrific moments." — The Vancouver Courier
