“Art can be fashion and fashion can be art” – that is the motto of Art in Fashion 613, a thought-provoking and innovative event that will come to the Library and Archives Canada building on Wellington Street on October 17. The event is the brainchild of Ottawa fashion designer Kym Brown of Bombshell Revival Designs , who has been creating garments, hats and fascinators for people who love to express their individuality and style through wearable art for several years.

Art in Fashion 613 is a combined fashion show/art gallery/night market at which visitors can enjoy a visual spectacle in a party setting with food, drink and music.  According to Brown, “…visitors can expect to see the work of designers and artists who do their own thing and are open to applying it to a piece that can be worn on the body in some way.  That could mean t-shirts, dresses, jackets, hats, body armour or decoration, sculptural pieces that can be placed on the body…..whatever inspires them…”

The event will showcase creations of 10 to 12 designers who will be participating in an actual fashion show, as well as 30 vendors/artists who will be showing as well as selling their creations in the night market portion of the event. Although this may sound fairly straight-forward, Brown explains the “twist: “Obviously, people can expect to see designers who make clothing but…they will also come across artists who, for example, love to paint or take photographs but have never put their work onto fabric and then had the fabric made into or applied onto garments or accessories.”

Whereas Brown is responsible for the creative side of the event, she reached out to yours truly, founder of local art and crafts hub CreativeOttawa.com and chair of the OVCC Guild , one of Ottawa’s art and crafts guilds, for the organizational side of the event. From the start, their vision for Art in Fashion 613 has been to find artists who are interested in and open to creating with the goal in mind of using their work as a wearable item - and not just wearable in day to day life.  The piece(s) created can be simply an art piece that can be worn on the human body, thereby using the model as the “exhibit” space in a fashion show setting. The same criteria apply to participating artists in other disciplines, such as jewellery, millinery and other accessories to ensure they fit with the art in fashion theme.

The first Art in Fashion 613 will utilize the principles of innovation, an eye for perfection and, above all, creativity!
