RE-BLOG: From sun to tornado, and everything in between: Environment Canada's weather icons

_ We’re on summer haitus this week & re-posting some good content from the past few years of our blog. Here’s one that originally appeared in June 2010 .

Yesterday morning, Ottawa was smothered in smoke from forest fires in Quebec. Environment Canada’s web site listed Ottawa’s weather condition as " Smoke “, illustrated by a small fire & smoke icon. A few people noted on Twitter that it was the first time they’d ever seen that icon as part of Ottawa’s weather report.

So I was wondering – what other unusual weather condition icons does Environment Canada have ready to go. It took a bit of sleuthing, but here’s the chart. 45 icons in total, raining from sunny to tornado.

** How I found them: **

 *
First I found the source image for "Smoke" at

 *
You can't list the entire contents of the /weathericons/ directory, but by inputting numbers you can find them -- from
[
 00.gif
](http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/weathericons/00.gif)
all the way up to
[
 45.gif
](http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/weathericons/45.gif)
. (29.gif is missing.) There could be more but that's all I could find!

 *
I can't tell the difference between 20, 21, 22 & 24 - they all look pretty cloudy to me!
