PHOTO: That time Hillary Clinton skated on the canal

Hillary Clinton made history Thursday, becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major U.S. political party.

Not sure if she was also the first First Lady to skate on the Rideau Canal, but that’s exactly what she did on February 24, 1995.

Having planned it in advance (she packed her skates on Air Force One), she took her Canadian counterpart Aline Chretien along for the ride.

It was a _ very _ Ottawa thing to do.

Of course, they weren’t alone once the media found out. The Secret Service wasn’t particularly happy with Clinton’s plot.

“She said, ‘I brought my skates. I’m going to skate. My security is your problem,'” former US-Canadian Ambassador Gordon Giffin told _ ** The Canadian Press . ** _
